Smith, R. (2008). I,Q: Independence Hall. Chelsea, MI: Sleeping Bear Press.
Quest, a.k.a. "Q", has had quite a week. First, his mom marries Rodger, another rocker in her band. Then, they take Q and his new step-sister Angela on a trip in a RV across the country for family time amidst the band's sold out tour. Before they can even have a chance to get bored on the road, Q and Angela discover they are being followed. Appearing virtually out of nowhere to help along the way is former roadie Boone (who also just happens to be a retired secret agent). Boone explains to Angela that her mother, a Secret Service Agent who was killed by a terrorist bomb a few years earlier, might not be dead after all. Could the people following Q's family be involved in that terrorist bomb? Is Angela's mother really alive and, if so, what does that mean to this newly joined family?
Things to think about and discuss while reading I,Q: Independence Hall:
* Compare Q's family cross country trip with a trip you went on with your family.
* Do you believe Angela and Q made the best decision to sneak away from the RV to meet with the "leopard"? Why or why not?
* How would you feel if you were Angela and Boone told you there was a possibilty that your mother could actually be alive?
* Who was your favorite character in the story? Why?
* What might have happened in the story if Boone never appeared?
* The next book in the series is titled I,Q: The White House. What problem might Q and Angela face in that story?
If you like the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz or other books by Roland Smith like Zach's Lie, then you will enjoy I,Q: Independence Hall. As an extra bonus, the second book in the series, I,Q: The White House, will be released later this year.
